Within the past month there have been different attacks on Facebook. I just wanted to refresh the warning that there are malicious people on Facebook and they can harm your computer and personal life.
About three weeks ago I had some friends who had accounts attacked. They received a message from a personal friend they knew that said something in gibberish like “yuor cwel clik link to see” (with a link attached). Once they clicked the link the attack spread to their contacts and so on. One by one my contacts were receiving the malware and it spread like wild fire. I would get a message from the friend with the malware and it would be another gibberish saying with a link. I never opened the messages and deleted them right away. My friends all changed their password and knew not to open any messages that seemed fishy.
A week later I had a few strangers asking me to add them as friends (for apps I play). Then I start receiving videos posted on my wall and in messages. I deleted them. Turns out they were malware. It was a video of a lady on a workout bike. My video said “(my real name) you might like this video of girl in bikinis on a beach“. Once again malware.
The third week videos saying “this is hilarious” started popping up. I didn’t receive any but my friends did. They were also malicious.
My advice is to just be cautious and alert when clicking links on Facebook. The security pretty much sucks and any malicious person can make a profile with no questions asked. If you do not know a person then delete their profile or do not accept them as a friend. I know it looks cool to have 200 friends but a huge majority of them are fake profiles. Some of those fake profiles are there to steal your information. Go through your contacts and start deleting them. With new security functions in place take the time to update your privacy.
There is a great Facebook security feature and it worked for me a few times already. It is a feature that allows you to get an alert/notification/email when someone tries to log-in to your Facebook account. You set up which computers or devices are yours such as “Bill’s PC”. If someone on an iPhone tries to log into your account you will immediately be notified and the message will say something like this, ” Troy’s iPhone tried to log in to your account at 5:00pm”. I deleted the notification so I don’t have the exact message. It is worth it and it is easy to set up. Follow the steps in the link below.
