Today’s Topics: Nexus One goes bye bye – Amazon eBooks out sale hardcover books

Today’s Topics:

Nexus One

Google pulls the plug on the Nexus One. Sluggish sales of the Android phone have caused Google to pull the phone off the market. Google plans to sell through the last shipment and then there are no more.

You will be able still purchase a Nexus One overseas since the phones will continue to be sold through Vodafone in Europe and some Asian carriers. Read more information on this subject on Google’s Blog.

Amazon’s eBooks are outselling hardcover books. Who would have thought that reading a book on the Kindle would become more popular than traditional reading? (Sarcasm)

In a statement by Amazon: “over the past three months, for every 100 hardcover books has sold, it has sold 143 Kindle books. Over the past month, for every 100 hardcover books has sold, it has sold 180 Kindle books.”

Picasa’s Picnik is launched

Google’s Picasa gets Picnik. Picnik is a simple photo editor which can be accessed right from your Picasa Web Album. All Picasa Web Albums users now have seamless access to the editing power of Picnik without ever leaving their account. Picnik was acquired by search engine giant Google a few months back.

Google Maps New URL Shortener

Google Maps Labs launched a new feature which will soon become the new standard. The latest feature is a URL shortener called ‘Short URL’, found in Google Maps Labs. The Labs pop-up window which can be accessed when you click ‘New’ at the top right of the Google Maps page. Short URL works the same way as other URL shorteners such as Google’s short URL’s are hosted at ‘’.

The idea for shortened URL’s came in to play when Twitter was launched and their text box limited users to 140 characters maximum. The new Short URL feature will be helpful to share links to locations on maps with friends and family without all of the clutter of a normal URL.

If you have never used Google Maps Labs, it is similar to Google Labs for Gmail.Google Maps Labs has plenty of other cool features to play with. Check out this clip from Tekzilla and see a few of Veronica Belmont’s favorite Google Maps Labs features.

Google And Zynga To Join Forces

There is a rumor buzzing around that Google has invested 100 million dollars or possibly more in social gaming giant Zynga. Google plans to join forces and launch a social online game hub called ‘Google Games’. This could be a risky move this late in the game race. I am not sure if Zynga will launch games exclusively on Google Games which is the only way I can see this working in Google’s favor.

Zynga as you may already know is the maker of FarmVille, Mafia Wars, and many other popular social games. Zynga has games on Facebook and they recently launched their popular FarmVille game on the iPhone. Zynga also recently launched FrontierVille which is already gaining popularity.

There are no further details of which game titles Google will offer. I am not sure why Google waited this long to jump on the Zynga wagon. What tricks does the search giant have up their sleeve that will entice new users and Zynga vets to their site?
